This is the computer version of an art activity that used to involve colored crayons, black paint and drawing by scratching in the wet paint with the blunt end of a paint brush. Designed for teachers needing to include some computer technologies in their junior and middle school art programs the resource pages can be be used as a student handout or as a reference for guided instruction. The software named in this resource is paint.net (readily available and free ) but the instructions given are easily transferable to any paint or photo-manipulation software with layered transparencies. The zip file included contains a paint.net file that has the colored background and black top layers already created. This 5 page unit of work is divided into three sections, Photography, Drawing Media and Computing Technologies, with the focus on portraiture. Students should take an estimated 10 to 15 hours to complete all the activities (including the homework task). It is suitable for distribution to students as a complete unit for self paced learning or in sections as a resource for more formal guided learning. There are activities that require students to work in pairs and others that require access to the internet for research.
